Synthetic fiber manufacturing, molecular sieving, catalyst regeneration… Many industrial processes require heating gas to extremely high temperatures, sometimes reaching up to 370°C (700°F) !

However, not all gases absorb heat with the same efficiency. A gas consists of countless tiny molecules moving at varying speeds, and these variations in speed affect their kinetic energy, which in turn determines the temperature. To achieve optimal heating, several key factors must be considered, as outlined below !

Basics of Gas Heating

First, let’s consider some physical principles.

Properties

We quickly observe that gases exhibit certain unique characteristics during heating, features not present in solids or liquids.

This is largely due to specific heat capacity, which refers to the amount of energy required to raise the temperature of a unit mass of gas by one degree Celsius. Some gases have a higher specific heat capacity, meaning they need more energy to achieve the same temperature increase.

In addition, gases are less dense than liquids and solids, which directly affects heat distribution. Their thermal conductivity is also relatively low, often necessitating the use of specialized equipment to ensure uniform heating. Without such equipment, achieving even temperature control can be challenging.

At high temperatures and low densities, the regime where the ideal gas approximation is valid, it is even negligible. However as the temperature decreases and/or the density increases the contribution of the interaction energy to the total energy becomes more important and the properties of the gas start to deviate from that of an ideal gas.
Finally, when the interaction energy becomes comparable to the kinetic energy, the gas condenses and becomes a liquid.

Heat Transfer Mechanisms

Gas heating operates through three primary mechanisms:

Conduction. Heat is transferred between gas molecules through direct collisions. However, because gases have very low density, conduction alone is typically insufficient for large-scale industrial heating.

Convection. Hot gases rise while cooler gases sink, producing natural or forced circulation. In industrial systems, fans and blowers are often used to enhance this process.

Radiation. In applications such as furnaces, gases can absorb and emit high-temperature infrared radiation, providing another means of heat transfer.

Key Parameters in Gas Heating

Ensure precise temperature control and maintain appropriate gas flow rates throughout the system. Both factors significantly influence heat transfer. Equally important is optimizing energy efficiency, which can be achieved through effective insulation and the use of suitable heating methods.

How can gases be heated effectively on an industrial scale?

Via Direct Heating

In this scenario, a burner or flame directly heats the gas stream, causing the process gases to rapidly increase in temperature as they mix with the combustion gases. This method is particularly well-suited for industrial drying, kilns, and certain specialized chemical processes. Strict safety precautions are essential when using this approach.

For the direct heating of non-flammable gases, tubular and finned heaters are recommended. These heaters can be installed individually within machines or tanks, or combined into a heating coil or duct heater for larger-scale applications.

Via Indirect Heating

This method is particularly suited for food processing and other industrial applications that require high-purity gases, as it keeps the process gas completely separate from flue gases or the heat transfer fluid. Heat is transferred through a heat exchanger, steam coil, or hot oil jacket, effectively eliminating any risk of contamination.

Although indirect heating may have slightly lower efficiency and higher installation costs, it provides enhanced safety and superior temperature control.

Via Electric Heating

Electric heating uses immersion heaters or electrical resistors to convert electrical energy into heat, which then raises the temperature of the gas as it flows through a conduit. If required, evaporators can also be employed to heat liquid gases. In addition to providing precise temperature control, this method is valued for its cleanliness and minimal environmental impact.

Electric heating is primarily used in laboratory processes or applications with relatively low gas volumes, due to its limited heating capacity.

A few points to consider:

Density (expressed in watts). As a general guideline, the target is typically 15 to 20 watts per square inch for nitrogen and 30 to 35 watts per square inch for natural gas. It is important to account for the inlet temperature, outlet temperature, and gas flow rate, as these factors can cause the values to fluctuate. The density should be adjusted accordingly to maintain optimal performance.

Surface area of the container. Exposed to radiation from the heating elements, the container’s surface area plays a crucial role in calculations. It is important to select the most suitable thickness and materials to ensure efficient and safe heat transfer.

Gas flow speed. The flow rate of the gas must be carefully managed. If the gas moves too quickly or too slowly, it can lead to various issues, including premature wear and tear on your equipment.

What about Renewable and Emerging Technologies?

In today’s era of sustainable development and technological innovation, there are alternative solutions for efficiently heating industrial process gases with minimal environmental impact. Examples include solar thermal systems, heat pumps, and hybrid systems that combine electric and conventional heating.
